American Island Health is embarking on an integrated care journey to support U.S. island healthcare. We work to strengthen the conditions that support healthier communities by expanding local care access, advancing disease prevention, and addressing geopolitical barriers that influence health outcomes across island and rural populations.
-
Collaborations shape the future of healthcare. American Island Health brings healthcare organizations, government agencies, and community stakeholders together around shared priorities—helping turn collaboration into coordinated action and lasting community impact.

Strong healthcare systems depend on strong local talent. American Island Health supports education, training, and professional development efforts designed to grow, strengthen, and sustain the healthcare workforce communities rely on.

From Mission to Action
American Island Health Initiative (AIHI) is a nonprofit healthcare organization dedicated to strengthening access, quality, and long-term healthcare capacity in underserved island and rural communities.
We recognize that island healthcare faces challenges unlike those of many mainland communities — including geographic isolation, workforce shortages, limited specialty access, infrastructure constraints, transportation barriers, and the complexities of caring for aging and medically vulnerable populations across great distances. AIHI was founded to help bridge these gaps.
Our approach is centered on partnership. We work alongside healthcare providers, hospitals, health plans, government leaders, community organizations, and other stakeholders to help strengthen the systems already serving local populations. Through clinical quality improvement, healthcare access initiatives, population health support, workforce development, technology, education, and strategic collaboration, AIHI helps communities build sustainable solutions that reflect their unique needs and circumstances.

Bring us the problem first; we can determine together whether AIHI is the right resource.
Have a Need We Haven’t Covered?
-
No. AIHI’s approach is to strengthen and complement the people and organizations already serving their communities. Whenever possible, we build upon existing resources, relationships, expertise, and infrastructure rather than duplicating them.
-
There is no single partnership model. Depending on the need, AIHI may serve as a collaborator, convener, program-development partner, implementation resource, technical-support partner, or connector between organizations and resources. The scope, responsibilities, objectives, and expected outcomes are defined collaboratively before work begins.
-
Absolutely. Partners do not need to arrive with a fully developed project. AIHI’s initial assessment process is designed to help clarify the problem, identify contributing factors and existing resources, and determine what type of response or partnership may be appropriate
-
Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are AIHI’s initial geographic priorities because of our organizational roots and mission focus. AIHI’s broader vision includes supporting underserved U.S. island and rural communities where our capabilities and partnerships align with identified needs.
-
AIHI believes sustainable solutions should be developed with communities, not simply for them. We seek local perspectives, existing knowledge, stakeholder participation, and community priorities when designing initiatives so that solutions are responsive to the environments in which they will operate.
